About MeHi! My name is Cameron Chambers, and I am a part of the SERVE community. A bit about me…
I grew up in Paso Robles, California, a land of golden grass and grape vines. It is a quaint little town, 30 minutes from the coast, where you could find me surfing the waves, and taking long walks on the beach. Seriously. I’ll admit that I never got to the pro level, though….. The surfing, I mean. I was, on the other hand, quite the connoisseur of beach walking. I have several hobbies that I enjoy on my free time including but not limited to; playing the guitar, playing the piano, hiking, surfing, longboarding, taking long walks on the beach, camping/backpacking, eating ice cream, and I enjoy most outdoor sports. After taking the Keystone Experience survey, I have discovered my top 5 strengths in this order; restorative, focus, futuristic, ideation, and connectedness. These strengths will be beneficial in my service work. |
Past Experiences |
I have had past experiences with service work, and I hope to get even further involved before SERVE entered my life. The picture above was taken on one service trip. The project was with a service group to Santa Cruz island, a channel island off the coast of California that is closed to the public. Here, we helped with efforts to revive damaged ecosystems and assisted scientists in their work to restore native species.
I have been apart of other service projects as well. For a time in high school, I was what is called a "big buddy," in which I mentored an elementary school student with disabilities. Additionally, I was apart of the Link crew at my high school where I mentored Freshmen, gave speeches and demonstrations, and helped put on events. I have found that I am passionate about environmental issues. |
The Goal |
Now I am here, a member of the SERVE living learning community. This year, through the community, I am going to be involved with service projects. I will find out what it means to be a part of something bigger than myself. To be an active member in a larger community. I will strive to understand the diverse ways people live there lives. Now, I will make a difference to others. And of course, I will grow as an individual.
Life on Earth is incredibly interconnected, but fragile. That is one thing I learned through past experiences with environmental service work. But it is not just wildlife that is interconnected. People are also interdependent of each other. I believe that as individuals in this global (and environmental) community, we must help others and the environment. |
